Learn how to use poetry to teach literacy and the standards during a free, interactive webinar this Saturday at 3 p.m. entitled "Use Poetry to Teach the Standards."
Margriet Ruurs, author of more than twenty-five children’s books and several educator resources including The Power of Poems, will discuss practical and meaningful ways to incorporate engaging poetry activities into your lessons.
During the session, Margriet—a regional winner of the 2005 IRA Award for Technology and Reading and a regular columnist for Reading Today, the IRA newsletter—will also share concepts from the second edition of The Power of Poems: Writing Activities that Teach and Inspire. The new edition includes over thirty activities/prompts for students, hundreds of poetry resources, and a new section on digital publishing.
"During this session," she said, "I hope to demonstrate to participants that using poetry throughout the curriculum will not only meet reading and writing standards but will get students excited about their own writing."
