New Curriculum Encourages Outdoor Play

Students now have the chance to take math, reading, and science one step further.

New curriculum designed to engage young children in outdoor exploration and play has recently been released by Project Learning Tree, a nonprofit organization that uses nature to increase students understanding about the environment.

The curriculum, designed for children ages 3 to 6, includes 11 hands-on activities that showcase more than 130 "childhood experiences," according to a  press release. The curriculum integrates nature with art, literature, math, music, and movement, as well as offers a music CD.

According to the release, the activities focus on kinetic learning and differentiated instruction, including using the music CD to encourage children to sing and dance. The music selections include instrumentals with different rhythms and cultural connections, nature sounds, classical music, and fun songs with educational lyrics.

Early childhood educators and caregivers can obtain a copy of Project Learning Tree's Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood curriculum by attending a Project Learning Tree professional development workshop in their area.
